Re; ....always remembered

Well, I am a fan of Dan's, not just as Matthew Crawley, which is why I follow this website, and occasionally contribute.

I cannot speak for "thousands or hundreds of thousands" of fans, but I, for one, will certainly not remember Dan "as the actor who ruined Christmas Day......"! Sad and shocking it may have been but the manner of his departure was not his to determine, nor when.

I think of him as a fine and talented young man, who was a major contributor to the success of Downton Abbey, but the show will stand or fall on its own merits as a drama with many main players in the cast.

RE: always remembered

Well said !

Dan was not responsible for the manner in which the Christmas Special ended and I agree it was a shocking and very sad scene but he was only doing his job and he personally did not ruin my Christmas either . Eight months on it seems incredible that people are still berating him for choosing to move on and further his career .

Re: ....and still more comments

Remember that the timing and manner of Matthew's departure was not Dan's choice, but that of the writer and producer. Dan's only decision was that he did not wish to extend his original contract and he gave due notice of this. His departure could have been handled in so many different ways!

...and still more comments

The fact that the manner of Dan Stevens departure from Downton Abbey on Christmas Day 2012 made such an impact on million of viewers is a tribute to his interpretation of the role of Matthew Crawley who is a rather bland character if you read the Scripts that have been published.. Julian Fellowes left it to the individual actors to make the most of what he provided with minimal direction.

Almost 8 months after the event to read what people are writing and saying reveals that for many people the death of Matthew Crawley is still raw and traumatic.

Yes, it is true that for millions of fans Dan Stevens exit from Downton Abbey did ruin their Christmas evening and for many people that is how Dan Stevens will be remembered for quite some time.

Downton Abbey Series 1 on ITV again, and what about....

I'm glad to see that Downton Abbey is being re-run on ITV3 next week. Starting right at the beginning with Series 1 and presumably going right through to the end of series 3.
Another opportunity to enjoy this great story, as it was originally intended to be!
The fact that we know what twists and turns are coming won't detract from the enjoyment and fascination that it will offer, and it will be another chance to appreciate the wonderful journey of Mary and Matthew.

Another TV drama mini series that would be good to see on air again is "Sense & Sensibility" starring Dan, Hattie Morahan and Dominic Cooper (all of whom were in the recent "Summer In February" film) and other fine actors. It was perhaps under-rated at the original time of showing, but has since proved to be one of the best dramatisations of this classic story.

Hilde

Does anyone know if there is an English captioned version of Hilde available anywhere? Would love to see that movie and understand it at the same time....

Hilde

Afraid there is no version of "Hilde" in English. I have tried and my dvd came from Berlin. I would love to know the translation of the song Hilde sings in the recording studio ! Any ideas? - ( although Dan would know. Maybe we should ask him for a translation!!) PG

Rote Rosen

As I remember, it's the very famous song "Fuer mich soll's rote Rosen regnen." That's the song Hildegard Knef was most famous for. You can find a translation here: http://lyricstranslate.com/en/fuer-mich-solls-rote-rosen-regnen-it-shoul....

Greetings from Germany!

Thank you

Thank you for this information

Mistaken

Oh, sorry, I was mistaken. The song is called "Lass mich bei Dir sein" (Let me be with you) - a wonderful love song. You can find the translation here:

Oooh! That's a good idea

Translation by Dan - excellent idea!

Re: Hilde

I have not been able to find one, although I have searched a lot! The German version does have some English dialogue in it, but it doesn't really help a great deal!

I do wish Gareth Neame would stop...

I do wish Gareth Neame would refrain from making the pointed remarks that blame Dan for that final scene. It was the choice of the writers/producers!

Another example from today's media"- "Neames made it plain that he had battled to keep Dan Stevens on the show, at least for a couple more episodes. ‘I know that tragic finale brought 12 million Christmases to an abrupt stop,’ he admitted."

It has been made clear and acknowledged that everyone involved was aware, before the start of Series 3 filming, that Dan was not extending his original 3 year contract, just like Jessica Brown Findlay. Therefore Matthew's departure/death could have been handled so much better than it was. Instead I rather fear that pressure may have been put on Dan to stay, hoping to change his mind and his other plans, and that the crash scene was a 'last minute' way out for the production team. It is also worth remembering that at the time those contractual decisions were made, late 2011 and early 2012, Series 4 had not even been confirmed and none of the cast or team knew for sure what would happen next. Reportedly it was not confirmed until late 2012, some considerable time after Series 3 filming had been completed, which could have made planning future projects very difficult.

Whatever the pressures, I feel that Dan gave another excellent performance as Matthew in Series 3, and will always be remembered for his very significant part in making Downton Abbey such a success.

I do wish Gareth Neame would stop

I too was a fan of Dan Stevens character, however I do have a certain sympathy for the writers. Dan himself has sad that he did not wish to appear again in any episode of DA. There have been many posts saying how it could have been handled better but I have as yet not seen one scenario that deals with the question of how you write Matthew's character out. He is newly married, new child - a natural progression of the storyline, they have come to be married after many travails, so what do you do, you cannot post him off to the Colonies to re-appear, he doesn't want to. You cannot suddenly have him fall out of love with the woman he has spent most of three seasons wooing, the public would have cried blue murder if they had not married, so even though he gave notice the plot had it's own momentum. He could not have gone to America to find out new business practice etc, he did not want to make another episode. That caveat made sure that the ending would have to deal with his complete departure from the series. We can all cry could have been handled better but how? Enough!!

How?

Death could have been off screen, between series, with the same 6 month jump as has now been filmed.
Thus leaving Christmas Special 'unspoiled'.
Death could have come much later in Series 4, Matthew Crawley having had to travel overseas to save investments etc. No need for Dan to have appeared anymore after Series 3.
Personally, sad as I was to lose Matthew, I think it was the right thing for him and possibly the extended life of the show.

Sad to read about the Swallows & Amazons delay

Disappointing news!

I do hope Dan will still be involved with it. I am looking forward to seeing him in yet another, quite different role. What a shame about the delay, but hopefully it will be able to go ahead next year.

No matter how hard we try...

No matter how hard we try to accept it, it seems that the subject of Matthew's departure from Downton Abbey just won't 'lie down'. Regardless of how the fans feel about Dan's decision, (I feel that it should be respected and no blame or anger be directed at him), the manner of his going is still much debated.
There was another way to deal with it, and probably others will have their own and varied ideas, that could have allowed for all parties to be accomodated, good storylines and plenty of dramatic opportunities. Please allow me to elaborate, although I know that what is done is done and nothing could change Series 4 now.
There was plenty of time within Series 3 to introduce the possibility that Matthew would have to go overseas to deal with a major problem regarding his inheritance from Reggie Swire. We know that he Mr. Swire had financial interests in other countries. Series 3 could have ended with both the happiness of the birth of Matthew & Mary's son, and the sad farewell to Matthew as he reluctantly left to deal with the urgent crisis. Plenty of dramatic opportunities there for them! As Series 4 is apparently spanning quite a short period, ie. not years, and is at a slower pace, letters and telegraphs could have been exchanged, Matthew could have gone missing, even died overseas, or any number of other possibilities. He did not have to return at all in Series 4, or if he had, then maybe a beautiful reunion at the close of the series could have been possible.
But, unfortunately we have to accept the way it was actually handled, even though that might be very reluctantly. It will be interesting to see how Downton Abbey evolves, although I feel that with so many 'celebrities' making one-off or brief appearances it is in danger of becoming a circus and not a well-regarded and much loved drama.
I would also like to take the opportunity of wishing Dan every success in his current projects - I love "Summer In February" and am looking forward to the various new films and audiobooks that are coming soon.

It says something that...

It says something that Dan's portrayal of Matthew and his romance with Mary was so well played and powerful that we are still reading about it constantly in the media, even in articles that have no actual connection with Downton Abbey, and of course Twitter, Tumblr etc are in meltdown again with the recent Series 4 launch interviews in the USA.
I am pleased that their long and beautiful story will be a significant theme in the forthcoming series, and I am interested to see how it is handled, by all the characters, especially by Mary, Tom & Isobel.
However, I am saddened, again, to read so many unpleasant and verbally aggressive remarks and comments, some of which are of a personal and coarse nature, being directed at Dan.
He made his decision not to extend his original 3 year contract, gave plenty of due notice, continued to give us a wonderful portrayal of his character Matthew throughout Series 3, and in return has been subjected to much unfair and objectionable criticism. He felt the time was right to move on, for many varied reasons, and we must respect him for that, admire his courage in stepping away and taking up new challenges, and thank him for giving us such a "memorable Matthew".
Dan is a very intelligent, talented, thoughtful young man, polite and considerate to his fans and supporters, and able to bring so much pleasure to those who watch, listen to or read his work. A big 'thank you' from me Dan!

SO SORRY TO HEAR...

I DON'T FOLLOW THE TUMBLE/TWITTER THINGS, AND AM SORRY TO READ THAT NEGATIVE COMMENTS TOWARDS DAN WOULD STILL CONTINUE. I ALWAYS FEEL THAT THAT SORT OF THING IS FROM VERY JEALOUS AND WRETCHED INDIVIDUALS WHO HIDE BEHIND THE ANONYMITY OF WHAT PASSES FOR "SOCIAL" MEDIA. DAN STEVENS CONDUCTS HIMSELF AS THE INTELLIGENT GENTLEMAN HE IS, AND I HAVE ENORMOUS RESPECT AND ADMIRATION T FOR HIM AS A PERSON AND AS AN ACTOR. NO WONDER HE HAS BEEN ACCEPTED HERE WITH OPEN ARMS. DOWNTON ABBEY, THOUGH MARVELOUS ENTERTAINMENT, STILL IS JUST A TELEVISION SHOW. GET A LIFE, CRITICS.

No mattee what or how....

I agree with your suggested synopsis for Series 4.... the opportunity was there re Reggie's legacy at the beginning of series 3.

The " If onlys' will continue to plague Dan Stevens for years to come as there appears to be a reluctance on the part of the media to let go of the 'Downton Dan' tag as no matter what he does or says or goes' that sobriquet goes with him.

No matter what or how.

Good Lord!! How boring and stultifying a series that would have made with Matthew overseas never to be seen again. Mary would become a shadow character unable to claim her rights or see to the estate or have new characters come to woo the widow and her inheritance. Plus a few telegrams from overseas hardly constitutes a love story and the viewing public are a bit sharper than falling for the lost in the swamp, killed by horses scenario. Also Dan said he would NOT appear in any other episode, so no heartfelt reunion but a death offstage by degrees, by which time we would all have lost interest anyway. Much better in plot terms to start the new series with what next rather than oh really gone abroad!

"Downton Dan"

That's a credit to how powerfully he made Matthew Crawley real to us. And there is no doubt, he will do the same in each and all of his future roles. Dan Stevens is a fine, fine actor.

SUMMER IN FEBRUARY Classic FM Saturday Night at The Movies

Still available to hear on LISTEN AGAIN - "Summer In February" soundtrack Classic FM "Saturday Night At The Movies" with Howard Goodall.

Re: Summer In February Classic FM....

It's at about 25 minutes into the programme if that helps!

Swallows & Amazons?

Has anyone heard any news about the new film "Swallows & Amazons"? It seems to have gone very quiet apart from a few inconclusive Twitter mutterings!
I hope that it will go ahead.

Swallows and Amazons

According to Dan Stevens, he will be returning to England when the 5th and final Ashes Test is being played to film "Swallows and Amazons" and to get in some cricket as well..

As the Third Ashes Test commences at Old Trafford on August 1st, it won't be long now before he's due back in the UK.

Dan & "The Guest" - what to expect!

A recent tweet by film producer Keith Calder "I'm not sure the world is prepared for how badass @thatdanstevens is going to be in THE GUEST."

It might be good/interesting/alarming/disconcerting to see Dan in such a different role. Mind you, he doesn't play an angel in "A Walk Among The Tombstones" either, so I am looking forward to seeing how 'bad Dan" will bring these roles to the screen. "Swallows & Amazons" will be yet another different 'type', but maybe somewhat 'gentler' than the other two!

I AM HAPPY TO SEE...

THAT WITH ROLES IN "WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES" AND "THE GUEST" DAN WILL BE SHOWING HIS VERSATILITY AND DEPTH AS AN ACTOR. AS FINE A ROMANTIC LEAD AS HE IS (AND I HOPE HE DOES MUCH MORE OF THAT), HE SHOULDN'T BE STUCK IN ONE MOLD, TOO GIFTED AND FAR TOO INTELLIGENT FOR THAT. I HOPE THE MOVIE WILL FOLLOW THE BOOK IN "TOMBSTONES..." BECAUSE HIS CHARACTER, THOUGH NOT ENTIRELY SYMPATHETIC, IS STILL LIKABLE AND VERY INTRIGUING. SOUNDS LIKE "THE GUEST" IS MUCH DARKER, BUT EITHER WILL BE HANDLED BRILLIANTLY BY THIS FINE, FINE ACTOR. GOOD LUCK IN ALL THINGS, DAN...AND PLEASE, ABOVE ALL,, REMAIN THE GENTLEMAN YOU ARE!

Dan missing from the Emmy nominations

I think it is wrong that he was not included and think we should start a write in campaign for him!

Missing, but never forgotten..

Dan may have been left out of the nominations, (who picks these, anyway) but Dan brought absolute magic to his role in Downton, there are scenes I will never forget, i.e. the railway scene when he is leaving for war, the dinner when Mary is trying to embarrass Matthew and he quietly and cleverly "matches" her, and of course that most romantic snowy proposal, to name just a few, He is the reason I get out my DVD's and watch Downton again and again. He played Matthew with exquisite taste, not once "chewing the scenery". The whole cast is wonderful, but it was Dan's portrayal of Matthew Crawley that made it all work.

Absolutely "never forgotten", and what next?

Matthew & Mary's story will be one of the 'all-time' greats, remembered for years to come with much affection and appreciation. The more often Series 1 & 2 are watched, it becomes even more apparent how well these characters were portrayed by Dan & Michelle. Series 3 was a very different phase in their relationship, again, an absolute joy to watch, and. again, so well managed by this very well matched on-screen couple. It would be wonderful to see them together on screen in something new in the future. We have enjoyed "Turn Of The Screw" and Downton Abbey, so what next?

Emmy awards

Dan did not deserve this terrible snub . His wonderful talent certainly helped keep Dowton Abby on top of ratings. I am so sorry that he was not recognized for he is as great actor. Shame on the committee who chose the nominees .

Emmy Awards

Exactly who constitutes the Committee that decide the Emmy Nominations? Are their based on the TV critics reviews? Or what?

With regard to the Downton Abbey Nominations the one person who should have been nominated for their performance in Series 3 was Elizabeth McGovern.

Dan Stevens was hampered by a poor script that did not allow for character development. He made the best of what he was given but evidently his best was not good enough for the Emmy Committee.

Summer In February featured album Classic FM

Everyday this week - "Summer In February" music

It's a delight to hear a track, every evening of this week, from Ben Wallfisch's "Summer In February" film soundtrack. Such beautiful and emotional music. On the Classic FM Drive programme 5.30pm - 8.00pm. Tonight's track "Art & Life" was played at about 6.30pm.

2013 Emmy Awards & Downton. Sad for Dan.

It is a shame that Dan was not included in any of the nominations for the 2013 Emmy Awards. He played such a central and significant role in Downton Abbey, and was a major contributor to the success of the show. Many of his scenes with Michelle Dockery are some of the most memorable in recent romantic drama, and his on-screen relationship with his mother, Isobel, so beautifully played by Penelope Wilton, are also worthy of note.
I hope that Downton does well at the awards, there are so many deserving contributors in the show, but it is still a pity that Dan is not amongst them. His departure, like Jessica Brown Findlay's should have no bearing on performance evaluation, as has been suggested in the media.

I miss Matthew Crawley!!

I definitely think he deserved to be recognized for his part on Downton Abbey. I fell in love with Matthew and wish he never "died". Mary and Matthew were my favorite scenes to watch and I sure wish he would "miraculously" come back to the show. There's no one better for Mary than Matthew. It's not going to be the same without him. Matthew and Mary were the PERFECT couple. Matthew was also such a romantic. I miss Matthew. I've never cried so hard when he proposed to Mary, when they married, and even more so when he died. It's just not right. :(

Now there's a good idea! Dan & Jeeves

Having read your link re P.G. Wodehouse & Jeeves, it occurred to me that should there ever be some new audiobook versions of these fine stories, then Dan would be perfect to read them! Also, a film about Wodehouse and the origins of Jeeves, and the original Authors XI cricket team would be quite special!

I was unable to open the telegraph article by Dan,

Isn't he in England filming

Isn't he in England filming Amazons and Swallows? By the way, Dan, when you return to the States, could you please bring Summer in February with you? I'm starting to worry!!
Thanks

Re "Isn't he in England...."

Possibly back in the USA now, or soon will be, to film "The Guest". Returning to UK later in the summer to film Swallows & Amazons.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are many other plans in the pipeline as well! I hope so!
Good luck Dan - looking forward to seeing and hearing them all.

Is this our Dan, or is there another? World of William

I have just read-

Dan Stevens speaks to children about being an actor Saturday during the World of William at Kilgore College's Shakespeare Festival Center. There is a photo but it is not possible to tell.
