DAN I LOVE YOU AND I HAVE SOLUTIONS.

Basically. I love you. And can't we just say that if you went into a coma after the car crash, instead of dying, they could spend a day filming scenes of you in hospital, then use them in different points throughout the coming series, let you go off and do your own things in theatre and film, and then when you realise how much you love Downton Abbey and how much you miss it, you just come back and recover from the coma. SORTED. Seriously, I should be your PA or something, it would be great. I looove you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Solutions

Nice try, but the latest news on series 4 gives details and photos of the gravestones of both Lady Sybil & Matthew Crawley. So all their fans will have to come to terms with the fact that resurrections won't happen.

An awful ending

Mathew,
DA won't be the same. It's hard to think how it will continue. Have lost interest. Please have a great recovery and be on DA in season 4. PLEASE!

Dan and Downton Abbey

I read the Town & Country article on Dan, in early February, and then I saw him in The Heiress on Broadway ( the opposite type person as Matthew Crawley, and done quite well ) two weeks before the U.S. ending of Season 3 of Downton Abbey. Never saw it coming! ...I was totally shocked at the ending as were my friends who watch the show, which seems to be the consensus of the comments here.
What I did not know, was that apparently Dan and many in the show had signed up for 3 seasons. Who would have guessed that a PBS presentation, as good as they can be, would have created the stir that Downton has! Very tempting to capitalize on such fame, and perhaps other contracts and negotiations are involved. I am so sad and haunted by the ending of Matthew Crawley, but looking forward to more terrific performances from Dan.
I agree with many of the fan comments that Downton Abbey will not be the same, but let's hope that Mr. Fellowes and the remaining cast will work their magic in Season 4, and continue to keep us enthralled.
Good Luck to Dan... Mr. Darcy in Death Comes to Pemberley would be interesting, but I heard and saw him "do American" on stage, and that also opens up endless possibilities!

Like everyone, else I'm glad

Like everyone, else I'm glad that Matthew became a father, but damned angry that he got himself killed in the same afternoon, giving us two orphaned children whose birthdays remember their parent's deaths. Glad that Dan has a growing career, sad that Mary is deprived of her great love.

aghhhhh

WHY could Matthew not have just worn his seatbelt!?!?!?! Well, anyway, best of luck Dan!!! You're a fantastic actor and I look forward to seeing you onscreen!!

I am still so angry!

Thank you, Mr. Stevens, for destroying one of the very best characters literature and film has ever had, and certainly my favorite! I couldn't even enjoy the third season, with this pall cast upon the whiole story. I will certainly remember the gory death scene complete with "dead eyes" and "blood" running from your left ear, rather than the happy, careless Matthew driving along. I will never be able to think the same of you, Mr. Stevens. Downton Abbey is by far the best thing I've ever seen on TV, and your character WAS the whole story for me! Matthew cared about everyone, and saved the freakin' day so many times. He also was a regular "REAL" guy and very clever which made him even more appealing! I LOVED how he argued with snooty Mary and always seemed to get her goat- and HOW! I will never understand why you have deprived of us of your talents- and this beautiful young man who was Matthew. I guess you don't understand how many people love you- and as Matthew- you OBVIOUSLY just don't GET it!! . There will certainly be many other roles for you, and other times, but, sadly, there will NEVER be "another" Matthew Crawley. No- not EVER., just as there will never be another Downton Abbey. God bless Julian Fellowes! God bless you too, Dan Stevens, for "allowing" us three seasons, anyway. I think you might regret your decision- as most of us do. And, YES, I care vehemently!

death to the young in Downtown

Can appreciate the desire of Dan to capitalize on his deserved popularity, however, am disappointed that accommodations/compromises could not be met to serve both the story line (which I believe has been nearly destroyed....it's getting too morbid) and production schedules of other venues. Know it's just TV, but it's a shame that fans will not be left with the love of the series that they once had, and not looking forward to #4.

Very Sad.... but idea for future

We are very sad to see you leave Downton. I was really affected by the last episode and have been grieving for the loss of your splendid character. I would like to suggest that you might do a future guest appearance (s) on Downton as a ghost checking in on Mary and your son, advising them, etc., since there is such a tradition of ghosts in the old houses of England. It would be such a treat to see you in the role of Matthew again even for small parts. I would suggest this to Julian Fellowes but I am not sure how to contact him.

All of the actors are superb on the show but you where one of my favorite's!

Coming to terms...

I was one of those who jumped up right after the end of Season 3 and wrote protests, trying not to be really rude, but feeling so upset at the ending - such a frustrating contradiction to the long struggle, then finally Matthew and Mary can really love each other and the family has survived, but suddenly the man who helped everyone get there, is now taken away. Aaaah!! It felt like the stages of grief after dying - one of those being anger! Silly, about a show, but that shows something about our need for stories of good people, who show that underneath icy demeanors, one can find and promote kindness.

But - - but - I have to say. A week has passed, and I feel the need to tone down, and to congratulate Fellows and Dan Stevens, because the image that stays with me, whenever I think of the show, is Matthew's face, as he was driving down the road: deleriously happy. It is a lovely image to be the last one to remember, and leaves me feeling glad for the joys the show did bring to so many. Thanks for doing that part so well, and leaving me and I am sure most others, with a joyous image, that does bring a smile, now that I've gotten over the shock. Kudos deserved!

Fare thee well

I'm sure "The Walking Dead" would welcome you! Truth be told, I prefer a 'wordsmith' to a 'thespian'. Keep on writing, Dan. You have a gift.
And to those weeping and wailing...it's television. Step outside your front door :p

Chillin' in Canada

Heartbroken!!!

Dan,

We do not know if you are reading this.

Mathew's character had the quintessential goodness and an endearing charm and that is the reason it is so hard to let go off him. The very idea of not being able to see Mathew Crawley again is causing a gnawing emptyness inside. Probably you did not know that your departure will cause this kind of stir which is a great testimonial to your acting.

I know you are very busy and all the best luck to all your future endeavors but it will be hard to watch Downton without Mathew Crawley.....

Please please come back to Downton Abbey

Dan,

We watch Downton Abbey because of you and Mary and cousin Violet. Please, please come back. The Broadway is not going anywhere and people will always make movies, there will be Holiwood opportunities and there will be Booker prize every year but the story line of Downton Abbey will be ruined if you go..Life is illusory but art does not have to be this cruel.
We are devastated since we saw the end of season 3...If they do not bring Mathew back, I am done with Downton so are all my friends who are watching this show with such fervor.

Listen to the viewers from either side of pond..Wake up from a coma and join the cast...Please please do us this favor.

Why on earth did you quit the show?

I can't believe that you decided to quit Downton Abbey. The poor writer of the show had no other option but to kill you off. After all the success this series had I am very surprised that you couldn't stick with it for at least another season. Very selfish.

Selfish?

A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Something like when Dylan went "electric"

Matthew

Mr. Stevens ...

I agree ... you (along with Maggie Smith and Michelle Dockery) are the Downton draw ... I canNOT believe they killed you off this way ... Any way they can make it a 'dream sequence' and keep you on?

Really? What a way to kill off a major character!!

The whole time i'm watching and thinking "He can't die after his wife just gave birth...that would just be too cruel"... then the blood coming out of the ears with eyes wide open and a car on top of him. Ugh!! Really Mr. Stevens and Mr. Fellowes that was too much drama for anyone to take! Couldn't you think of a more dignified departure??

One last thing... PLEASE COME BACK!! I really only watched the show because of you and Mary. Oh and Cousin Violet. :)

The end...

Ditto... everyone I know is saying the same thing.

You made the difference

You made the difference between enjoying DA and loving it. (You and Maggie Smith.) I'm wondering if you are reading the comments and seeing how much people feel about your character's departure. Do you really like living in NY and doing Broadway more?

You will be missed.

Dan leaving Downton.

I have probably watched every episode of Downton Abbey at least 10 times. Except the very last one. It breaks my heart that the star of the show would want "freedom" from one of the most watched shows in the world. WHY? To have given up such an amazing oppertunity is throwing away success with both hands.

Many times I have watched Downton Abbey just to see Matthew and Mary together, being happy. But WIDOWS are NOT happy, are they? ESPECIALLY new mother widows. How is Mary going to survive without him?

If there is ANY way possible in the ENTIRE WORLD for Matthew to be put back on the show, PLEASE DO IT!!!!!

A Distressed Viewer from America

Matthew Gone!!

I entirely agree with the above post. I find myself depressed about the death of a make believe character in a make believe production.

Please bring Matthew back. I'm sure he could survive that crash if you really gave it some thought.!!

Please don't go!

How could you walk away? You've devastated two continents in leaving. Please come back! Your love story with Mary was the only thing I looked forward to all week. Please oh please don't let it end this way!

On Behalf of millions of fans...

Please do not ruin a wonderful show for millions of people. If there is any way to come back on season four of Downton Abbey, please consider it. At least for a few more shows. The Downton Abbey Facebook page is full of die-hard fans who cannot believe the season three finale. The show will truly be ruined if you allow it to continue on without it. The basis of the show was your character and Mary falling in love. How can you allow the show to be ruined? Please reconsider.
Sincerely on behalf of thousands of fans, Thank you

Downton Abby series 3

Totally agree with 'unhappy from Martinsville's' comment!
A loving and committed relationship is so hard to find these days especially in movies.
I think that deep inside we are all longing for this kind of love.
Matthew and Mary touched that special corner of hope in a humans heart. Well done!
So sad to see something special end once again.

Dan Stevens

I am an American viewer who was drawn to Downton Abbey by my daughter's interest. It was so rewarding to finally see the happiness that "Mary and Matthew" were enjoying. It seems so terribly wrong to destroy the joy of marriage by removing Dan Stevens from the series. Many modern young couples are seemingly afraid of the commitment of marriage and Downton Abbey WAS demonstrating that MANY couples do seriously love and try to make each other happy. I am truly saddened that Dan and the writers of Downton Abbey decided that it was O.K. to change EVERYTHING and allow Dan Stevens to leave. Perhaps, at least the death scene might have been altered to allow Dan the remote possibility of returning to Downton Abbey at a later date.! No one will ever be able to replace "Matthew in Mary's eyes" nor in mine !

The power of love...

I think you put your finger exactly on why so many Downton Abbey fans mourn the death of Matthews. Because in the depths of our souls, there is a desire for that kind of love...
Dan Stevens, you managed to bring that spark in our hearts alive, through your acting - it's big and meaningful - something to be proud of.
When art (in whatever form it may be) touches the hearts of people, the artist has really succeeded ...
Mr. Sevens, please continue to touch our hearts through your writing, speaking and acting! /annica

So hard to see you go...

I agree with these sentiments. You were my favorite actor on Downton and I'm not sure if I can continue to watch now, esp. with Sybil gone also. It was hard to see those blue eyes wide open in the end of Season 3. You played Matthew so perfectly--charming, witty, and so in love with Lady Mary. You are very talented. Since I'm from the U.S. I don't know how much I will see you in films but will definitely look for you. Downton just won't be the same. Best of luck to you!

Too much grief.....

Life can be a struggle and the Downton Series brought a sense of decency and family loyalties that made the real world a little less caustic. After being drawn into a level of joy with the birth of the baby and then to witness that key character killed is just too much like the rest of tv. (Matthew never would have driven like a fool....) Dan, thank you for the excellent job you've done playing Matthew. Wish you could have continued. Blessings for your future~ Lilly in the US

真是太好看了

这位表哥好帅呀!!!!不知有没可能来中国作宣传什么的,真想去英国看真人呀!祝Dan Steves先生越长越帅,事业越来越顺利。The best wishes to you and your family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

stinks

I think it is a selfish decision to leave when you have such a huge fan base. I will never watch another serial drama with you, because who knows when you will abandon your fans. If Ricardard Armitage is not a superstar in the US yet....you don't stand a chance. Do a couple more Town & Country interviews and keep believing the hype.

Childish

Yet another malevolent comment from someone who is obviously not a Dan Stevens fan but a fan of a character who does not exist.
I suggest that you read "Re:You are a selfish.." posted on February 18th which explains quite clearly the dilemma faced by all the actors in Downton who had signed up for three series and three series only!

Shame on you for this comment "stinks"

I made this reply on this site to another irate poster - I think that it applies here as well. (Please forgive the repetition)

Shame on you! There is no need to be so rude to someone, however upset you may be feeling.

Understand the facts behind the decisions! Dan Stevens & Jessica Brown Findlay, like many in the original cast were contracted for 3 seasons. Both gave notice before S3 filming began that they would not be extending their contracts beyond this. Even those who wished to continue were not certain that Series 4 and possibly 5 would be commissioned, and several had to either postpone or cancel their other projects/appearances in order to accomodate the filming of S4 when it was finally confirmed. Perhaps you would consider it 'fair' or 'unselfish' for all the cast to put their careers on hold whilst the decisions about the future of Downton Abbey are debated!

I am very sad that Downton Abbey has lost two very significant and dearly loved characters, but I wish Dan and Jessica well for their futures.

An additional note - apparently Julian Fellowes has recently stated that he might not be writing future Downton Abbey series episodes, as he has other commitments/projects planned, one of which is the period drama set in the USA. So, perhaps we should all pause a moment and consider our opinions before giving vent to them.
