Downton Abbey 3: PBS finale record 8.2 million viewers!

The Hollywood Reporter has shared an article about the wonderful viewing figures for Sunday night's finale broadcast. Over 13,000 visited this website after the broadcast so those figures make sense! Read the article in full on THR site.

Sunday's season three finale, originally broadcast in the UK as the 2012 Christmas special, pulled in 8.2 million viewers to the public broadcaster. That's a 50 improvement from last February's 5.4 million finale and a jump of 300,000 improvement from January's season opener. The third season of Masterpiece Classic's Downton Abbey consistently outperformed the second season, besting the previous season average by 66 percent.

Omg, it's so sad!

Omg I just can't believe Matthew is gone! I still watch DA but it's nowhere near as good and I just can't get over the fact that there's no more Mary and Matthew! It's so sad!

Bring Back Matthew

I say someone start a petition to bring him back. It can be done since we never saw him buried. I don't know how to get petition circulated but would gladly sign it. If large number of people request his return, perhaps we will get happy ending we want.

Bring Back Matthew Crawley

There is a petition on Facebook. Here is link:

If I knew Matthew was coming back for final episode, I could continue watching series. I can't otherwise. I think Dan Stevens and Julian Fellowes would make millions of fans happy if they did this.

Please give Dan some credit

Please give Dan some credit for knowing his own mind and being able & determined to move on to other challenges, roles and projects. He gave us three brilliant seasons of a great TV show. A show that was only ever originally intended to run for three seasons, and was only extended due to the phenomenal success it was.
Personally I believe that the Downton Abbey story was at its best in the first three seasons, One & Two being the strongest, but whilst there is public demand for more and there is financial gain to be had, it will probably continue for a bit longer.
The on-screen chemistry that was so evident between Matthew and Mary was very special, and it is a joy to re-watch and savour those episodes.
Since leaving Downton Dan has done so much great work, in many different spheres, so let us just enjoy what he has done in the past, what he is doing now, and whatever is yet to come.

I agree. Just now I have been

I agree. Just now I have been watching Downton Abbey again (the whole series over the last few days), and feel the same, even after a year. Dan as Matthew can make you fall in love with him all over again with only a very few scenes. I mean, there are not that many or any long scenes with him but his charisma and amazing voice suffice to enchant each time. I miss him so much in Downton Abbey 4.

Dan has definitely captured everyone's heart

Dan Stevens is a truly amazing actor.

If you actually clock the screen time he has on Downton Abbey in Season 1, it is not much more than being a part of the emsemble. Yet, but the moment he uttered, "I have to know more about the princess and the sea monster in question" at the dinner scene, we were all in love with and enthralled by Matthew Crawley. (Yes, we too loved him for a lot longer than we know!)

If you see "Sense and Sensibility", he is even better at grabbing our hearts within mere moments on scene. I think he got the role as Matthew Crawley when Julian Fellowes saw him as Edward.

I point is - Dan Stevens will be a great presence in any film/project he takes part in. He will always shine!

Re Dan has definitely.....and a thank you

Absolutely right.......there is a remarkable chapter in Jonathan Smith's book "The Following Game" where he writes about when he first heard Dan audition for a role in a school production. So, a big thank you to Mr. Smith for recognising, encouraging and nuturing Dan's early days in drama, and a big thank you to Dan for following his own talents and skills and sharing them with us all.

....and a thank you.....

Dan Stevens wrote a short article for an Educational Magazine about the teacher who had a major influence on him not only as a student but later also as his mentor and close friend.

In this short article Dan tells the story of Jonathan Smith, his English teacher, being wise enough to see beyond the mask of the troublesome, rebellious, unco-operative student and who directed his untapped energies into drama. There were two teachers who worked in unison to form Dan Stevens the actor and scholar. Jonathan Smith became his confidant and friend. It was he who encouraged Dan to go to Cambridge rather than accept the offer from a Drama School.

Jeremy Cowdrey was also taught by Jonathan Smith at Tonbridge School. These two former students have now combined to bring one of Jonathan Smith's novels to the screen. A tribute to a great teacher.

Dan Stevens's Sad Exit from Downton Abbey

Seems that Dan Stevens is becoming the biggest entertainment thing to come out of the UK since the Beatles 48 years ago. I was there for all of that back then, and remember it well. My oldest friend and I were the heads of the New Jersey Beatles fan club, and here we are, still together almost 50 years later and mourning the death of Matthew Crawley!

The various points of view I have read here all seem pretty heartfelt, and while my old friend and I are on the side of "Bring Back Matthew," there seem to be some valid points from the "Let's Move On" crowd. Whatever turns out to be the future of the story, we will be there at Downton Abbey next season, and we will enjoy it immensely. We have to have a little faith in the producers, cast and crew of this fabulous series.

Tom Cullen is no replacement for you

I am a loyal fan of DA and DS. When I saw that Tom Cullen was casted as Mary's new love, I gasped in horror and am definitely leaving DA along with DS.

Any Donors?

If the 8.2 million who viewed pledged one dollar, that would've been a good haul for PBS.

Moving On

Fans of Dan as Matthew Crawley continue to lament his tragic demise, with some even making the ludicrous suggestion that he be resurrected. Isn't it about time they moved on. I've no doubt that Downton will survive and thrive without those fans who have vowed never to watch it again without Matthew. I do hope though that it won't go on beyond its sell by date. As for Dan new and interesting projects seem to be appearing thick and fast. Good luck and best wishes Dan -I believe your departure was timely for you and for Downton. Another busy year for you, but hopefully not a crazy one.

... sniff sniff

rather the show had just ended right after that baby was born, with a montage of Mary and them growing old together. So, Mr. Stevens, I guess I'll end my rant, but I just hope that you realize how many little girl's hearts you've broken.

Absolutely agree

Even though the heart and the romance of Downton has left, for me, with the death of Matthew, a part so beautifully played by Dan Stevens, I will watch next season...what will Mary name their son, and of course there is still the remarkable Maggie Smith. As my daughter pointed out, "we can resurrect him any time we choose" as we launched our first, but not last, Downton DVD marathon! Good luck in all things Gentleman Dan, you deserve it.
A USA fan

I agree too!

Dan picked a good time to leave Downton but he will be missed. On another note I can not wait to see what Dan does next. Whatever it is I am sure it will be fantastic! If I see him in a movie/show preview then I will be watching:). ...(another USA Fan)

Dan Stevens IS Matthew Crawley

Resurrect Matthew... he's been more than 3 days dead in the grave.

A sizeable majority of Downton Abbey fans don't want a replacement for Matthew Crawley. That story is over. Dan Stevens made the character what it is in the eyes of very many fans. The penchant that some people have for shower scenes..comas... dreams.. just won't work for many many fans in many other countries around the world.

If people wish to entrench Downton Abbey in the trashy US soap opera category, so be it but it will be a tragic development for a series that was once regarded as the best to come out of Britain for over 10 years. It had class.

Why should it become a 21st Century version of a 1920's Georgian 'Dallas'?

Dallas

When Barbara Bel Geddes had a health crisis in the middle of the run of Dallas, the producers hired another esteemed actress, Donna Reed, who stepped into the central role of the family matriarch. The following year Bel Geddes returned and carried on to the end of the run. No coma, dream or shower scene. That's what they could have done for Matthew, and then we fans could have had a good time arguing over whether we prefer Matthew #1 or #2. Witness the discussion of the two Harrys on the As Time Goes By Facebook page.

Downton has stepped into the "trashy US soap opera category" with this unimaginative finale. Everyone back into your black dresses. Boring!

I MANAGED TO...

KEEP THE SECRET OF THE CONCLUSION OF SERIES 3, ESPECIALLY FROM ONE OF MY DAUGHTERS WHO IS AS AVID AND ENTHRALLED FAN OF DOWNTON AS I, SHE HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER, AND UNDERGOING THE TREATMENT OF IT NOW. AND WHEN WE WATCHED THE FINAL SCENES OF SEASON 3 TOGETHER, SHE WAS AS SADDENED AS I WAS. SHE, AND I, ARE SUCH GREAT FANS OF MATTHEW/DAD STEVENS, ESPECIALLY SINCE MR. STEVENS HIMSELF SEEMS TO EMBODY SO MANY OF THE FICTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MATTHEW IN HIMSELF, AN INTELLIGENT GENTLEMAN, AND A KIND AND CONSIDERATE ONE. AND MY GOODNESS, SUCH A HANDSOME ONE..(.I MAY BE OLD, BUT I'M, NOT BLIND) SHE INSISTED, WITH NO QUARREL ON MY PART, THAT WE BEGIN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SERIES (AND I HAVE ALL, INCLUDING #3) ON DVD. AND WE HAD A MOST WONDERFUL "DOWNTON MARATHON" STRETCHING OVER A COUPLE OF DAYS. DAN, YOUR ENCHANTING PERFORMANCE WENT FAR BEYOND THE ORDINARY. FOR THOSE SEVERAL HOURS WE WERE TRANSPORTED TO A WORLD OF GRACE, ELEGANCE , COURTESY AND CLASS. AND YOU WERE ALWAYS THE SHINING PRINCE WE LOOKED FORWARD TO. THE WHOLE CAST IS JUST MAGNIFICENT.....BUT MATTHEW IS THE ONE WILL MISS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING THE REASON WE WERE LIFTED OUT OF A DIFFICULT PRESENT, INTO A LOVELY, INTERLUDE.

Dan - all DA fans are YOUR fans - Matthew should come back

Dan, you were the heart and soul of Downton. I simply cannot think of watching or loving Downton without you. I've read about the fans turning against you on Twitter. I hope that you understand that the only reason why they did that was because they couldn't bear you leaving the show. You literally carried the show as one of its pillars. Taking that pillar away would make the entire edifice of the show collapse. Matthew's death puts Downton in a new but wrong direction - casting Tom Ellis, who is better known for his looks than his acting, to replace you as Mary's new love interest or even the speculation that Mary would end up with Branson is has launched this series into trashy soap opera terrain. Seeing that, I have one suggestion. Since Julian Fellowes just declared in the media that he would leave Downton for NBC's "The Gilded Age" (if the pilot is approved) - and I do hope that's the case because he did destroy Matthew's storyline - and since American fans could not get over Matthew's "death" (case in point: someone filed a White House petition against you being in America), and since "Downton" is going the soap opera route, we would like Downton producers to "resurrect" Matthew in Season 5 to make worldwide fans happy. If that happens, please do not turn us down. There are so many tragic and harsh realities that we face in real life. We don't need to deal with more of that and that is why we "escape" to Downton. You were not just a part of Downton - you ARE the heart and soul of it. Please come back to Downton. If so, you'll have no idea how many more doors that would open for you.

No Substitute

Though I knew that Matthew would die at the end of season 3, He has always been my favorite DA character, so I had some tears. It is so seldom one actor combines the good looks, natural charm, charisma, with such talent as Dan Stevens brought to the character of Matthew Crawley. No one else could possibly match that. Hate to see you go, Dan, but you have a tremendous career ahead of you!

Dan Stevens

I wonder why an actor in the most popular series in years would not want to continue. I confess that, like millions of other viewers, I fell totally in love with Matthew Crawley, the only voice of reason, at Downton Abbey.

I find it hard to imagine a replacement which will have to happened but the whole thing is disappointing and sad.

Dan Stevens

I quite agree. I was floored when Matthew had the car accident . The whole thing is very disappointing and sad!!

Say it isn't so...

Matthew and Mary finally together and getting Downton back on track. I was looking forward to your lives together. Another death in the family makes me wonder should I even watch season 4.

Finale of Season 3

Agree completely. Everyone back in black next season, no thanks. A terrible, unimaginative ending, a real fall from grace that left me feeling exhausted with the whole thing. Replacing central characters in series has a time-honored history; witness Dallas, Bewitched, Poldark, et al. Surely there are a lot of blond, blue-eyed actors in the UK, who would have been happy to take on the role.

Death of Matthew

I agree. I was so disappointed with the death of Matthew. Almost everyone I know who has watched the series was feeling the same way. I don't know if I can get into season 4 with two of the major characters now gone.

Can't watch it ever again!

Didn't realize what a crush I had on Matthew (Dan Stevens) until the last episode! I was mad and thought, "I'm not even watching this show anymore." I see a lot of others feel the same way!
