Downton Abbey - should have stay with original part of 3 seasons
If the finale of Downton Abbey Season 3 has ruined the show for all its loyal fans, I think the producers are to be blamed. All the lead actors were offered a 3-season contract, and Dan Stevens has definitely fulfilled his contract. In fact, his wonderful acting skills which elevate a nice guy with agreeable manners and gentle ways into someone dynamic and vibrant - a character who would answer the prayers of an ideal husband, brother, son, and friend.
The producers should have ended Downton Abbey at Season 3 with the birth of the heir, and then take a break, and bring Downton back in a couple of years. Loyal fans around the world would have waited for their favorite actors/actresses to pursue other worthy projects. Look how well James Bond films have fared over the decades!
The heart of the Downton Abbey saga hinges upon the title and inheritance. May I suggest that Season 5 should "jump ahead" to the Battle of Britain (summer and autumn of 1940) Matthew's son would be about 18 or 19 - and as joined the ranks of the RAF pilots. Instead of endless soap opera like love storiies, we go back to the original theme - Downton's future is in peril again, this time with the young heir fighting for King and Country. Will he survive to marry and have children? Will Downton survive another round of economic upheavels of war??
Leaving Downton
It was a timely thing to do because there's not too much a married couple can do for excitement besides have affairs, get a fatal disease, etc., and we would not want to see that happen to either Mary or Matthew. Matthew was a perfect man and husband, and would have been a perfect father. Rest In Peace.
More to life thay affairs, fatal diseases, etc!
There could be so much more than affairs and fatal diseases on Downton Abbey. Since Matthew has all the money and Tom seems to want to stay at Downton and help the business of Downton. The two together could rebuild the farm part. The baby could grow in the family. The downstairs servants always seem to have a story or two going. With Julian Fellows imagination, there could be so much more going on at Downton Abbey. I think they need to revive Matthew and bring him back! Then that would make a lot of people happy especially me!
Downton abbey
I bought the complete third series even before it finished airing and was very sad to see the final take. Dan to me you are the leading character, without you downton will not be the same. I am so sad
to here you will not be there for s4. Can't envision myself wanting to see or anticipate s4 :'(
Downton
I agree with the comment above. I actually cried, really cried at the end of Season 3. I see Matthew as the most positive person at Downton. I can't imagine how the show will hold together without his character. Who is going to make Mary do the right thing? Certainly not her father. I could go on.
I understand that actors like Dan don't want to be "stuck" in a role and never be able to portray other personas. I respect your decision. But, Dan, I'm going to miss Matthew.
Dan's Future Projects
I do not care what Dan does because I will not be able to look at or think about him without being reminded on how he screwed up Downton Abbey by leaving.
Dan's future.
I don't know who the above poster is, but they obviously are very unhappy and self-absorbed. Dan is a very intelligent person with other goals in mind besides Downton. As much as we all loved Matthew, and will miss him in S4, Dan IS allowed to move on to other awaiting projects, Let's all just sit back and wait to see how the future unfolds for him. 'Don't worry-be happy'.
Re "Dan's Future Projects"
What an unkind and unnecessary comment!
Having given us such a wonderful, likeable and convincing character as Matthew for the three series, I have nothing but praise and respect for Dan. He completed his contractual commitments, apparently having made it clear at the start of S3 that the third would be his final one. The whole matter of Matthew's departure has been handled badly, but by all involved, not just one party. As has been said before, here on this site and elsewhere, Downton Abbey should have ended as originally envisaged, ie. end of S3, with perhaps a 'revisit' a few years on, to give everyone a bit of time and space to follow other projects and ideas.
If you do not wish to follow Dan's future projects, which I am sure will be interesting, varied and well done, then that is of course your choice. I for one, although very sad knowing that I won't see Matthew and Mary together in S4, wish him the very best of luck and good will.
Thank you...

Looking forward to see Dan in DA series 4
We Spanish fans are currently enjoying Downton Abbey series 3 and looking forward to series 4. Dan Stevens has done a great performance as Matthew Crawley, the series won't be the same without him.
P.C.R.
The rumours
Enough of these rumours! One vague, unproven source seems to have started an avalanche of misquotes and increased speculation. Don't let the Christmas Special be spoiled by such stuff - what will be, will be.
I cannot believe how unpleasant and discourteous some bloggers and tweeters are being.
Best wishes to you Dan -
Stevens Leaving Downton
It is unfortunate that actors rush off from a series prematurely to follow the fast money and fame somewhere; it happened on Lark Rise/Candleford, too and it leaves not only the viewers with a reduced program but has an effect on their fellow actors, too. I wonder if Mr. Stevens considered the ramifications of bolting Downton prematurely? I am disappointed by his decision.

Downton Abbey Finale
Mr. Stevens I have told you before "You are such a sweetheart ".....excellent final episode of Downton Abbey last night . I waited all week with trepidation wondering what would transpire in the final scenes but admit through teary eyes I was happy .
I love the more assertive Matthew especially when he is cross with the Lord ( deservedly so as Robert is stuck in a timewarp) and the contrast in the softness with his beloved Mary who has become a nicer person since her marriage , the sad loss of her sister and the arrival of the baby Sybil who they both clearly adore.
If there is to be a fourth series it will not be the same if you are not part of it , your British fans are all behind you wherever your career takes you and we will be happy for you but America is not the be all and end all for our British actors .....fake accents ..horrid !
Please consider finishing what you started ....
P.S love the cricket scenes , you look fab in whites !
Please Don't Leave Downton Abbey
Dan Stevens, please don't leave the Downton Abbey Series. I am really looking forward to the 4th season and I hope that you will be in all of the episodes. This show will not be the same without you.
-An American Viewer
Please don't go....
Rumors of your exit have filled us with sadness.
We really hope you stay.
Downton has been a wonderful respite during a very difficult time. I haven't gotten so attached to a story since I was a child.
I do hope you stay.
It won't be the same without you.
-Another American viewer who knows hordes of American viewers.
DOWNTON - AND OTHER STUFF TOO!
Come on, Dan - you'll be perfectly able to keep Downton going as well as any possible new theatre or films that may come your way. Don't kill your golden goose nor cross the Rubicon - you never know when you might need a "back-up plan".
I know it's natural for a young man to want fresh fields and pastures new (gee, I'm getting ALL the old cliches in here!) BUT there's no harm in keeping a safety rope attached, just in case.
Perhaps Julian Fellowes might agree to write you in an "American venture" to explain your absences!
On behalf of all your anxious fans, Love from Linda (UK)

Come Here Dan
Dear Dan, We love you. What a wonderful actor you are. Can you and Michelle please come to Toronto, Canada? Can't get enough of Downton - esp. you and Michelle. Please keep making the shows.
When you looked slightly downward into the camera
in the pic yesterday, you looked eerily like Benedict Cumberbatch. Chin up. Break a leg!
MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO....
First of all...news of the birth of Dan and Susie's second child. Love that Dan seems to be such a loving and proud father. Then each and all of his other achievements, 3rd (and beyond?) season of Downton, a triumph on Broadway, in "The Heiress", and "Summer in February" , which looks to be a beautifully romantic film. Perfect for Dan. And even...more book recommendations!

SUMMER IN FEBRUARY
So looking forward to "Summer in February", from all I have learned, it will be a beautifully romantic story, and with Dan's involvement, wonderfully well acted and filmed. Quality, for this intelligent actor who deserves a perfect showcase for his unique talents. There are very few, is any, who can match him.
